Curiosity Seeds that ask about the workings inside things
These cards ask about the principles hiding inside things you use every day, like zippers, locks, and umbrellas.
They get you to look again at things so familiar you passed them by, and they're made to be used together with the Curiosity Exploration sheet.
You can look right at an object you can hold in your hand, so the question never turns vague.
How it works
- Cut out the cards and pick one object question that catches your eye today.
- Copy the question onto the Curiosity Exploration sheet, then actually touch the object or look at it closely.
- Write down, in separate spaces, what you already know and how you'll find out more.
- After observing or looking it up, sum up what you found in the last space.
When · with whom
Good for a child who wonders about everyday objects, and also good when a grown-up wants to lead with observation rather than explanation.
Object curiosity seeds
- How does a zipper join two rows into one?
- What has to line up inside a lock for it to open?
- Why do umbrella ribs spread out from the center?
- Why is the lead of a pencil inside the wood?
- How does a mirror give my reflection back to me?
- Why does a rubber band stretch and then go back?
